Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is one of the key elements in the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) process which turns toxic emissions into harmless nitrogen and water. Diesel-engines and vehicles that are equipped with SCR systems using DEF not only meet EPA emission standards, but they are also fuel-efficient. It is estimated that the market for DEF is steadily growing as an estimated 10-20 percent of the diesel fleet has already converted to the engines that require the use of DEF.
Although stringent emission regulations are being enforced by the EPA, there are still many who have delayed their investment in newer, more environmentally friendly engines or have gone for the option of refurbishing old engines to avoid having to comply with the 2010 emission standards. Due to unrelenting environmental regulations, we will ultimately see the conversion of all diesel engines to adopt the SCR technology which would need DEF.
As stated in a White Paper by Brenntag from 2009, it is predicted that due to current fleet turnover rates, annual DEF consumption rates can reach up to 725 million gallons by 2015. Further market studies have also suggested that consumption will be up to 1.3 – 1.5 billion gallons by 2020. With these and other trends, DEF products will surely continue to rise in popularity in the coming years.
